Another significant finding was that a quarter of all drug-abusing patients also tested positive for illicit drug use other than the prescription drugs. And half of these patients denied using other drugs, in spite of guaranteed anonymity.

The findings of this study confirm earlier studies that patients with chronic pain often mislead physicians about illicit drug use while seeking more painkillers. And people with existing or prior addiction or substance abuse problems are not good candidates for unsupervised opiate prescriptions.

Addictive opiate painkillers are regularly seen as the main problem drugs in drug rehab settings across the country, as well as in hospital emergency rooms and even morgues. Interaction with other drugs, whether prescription or illicit, can greatly increase the risk of sickness or death, while opiate painkillers alone over long periods almost guarantee the need for drug rehab.

Primary care physicians should carefully investigate patients before prescribing highly addictive painkillers like OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin, methadone and other opiates, and try to determine if there is any history of addiction, substance abuse or earlier drug rehab.

Physicians should also point out the highly addictive nature of these opiate painkillers, and stress that drug rehab will very likely be in the cards for them if they develop a dependence that leads to abuse or addiction. Finally, prescribing physicians should make patients acutely aware of the serious dangers of drug interactions, which could lead to results far more dire than a drug rehab program.

Could Drug Rehab Have Saved this Family?

This morning I read a heartbreaking story about a 23 year-old-man who lost everything his family owned to heroin addiction. He had tried marijuana and cocaine when he was younger, but didn't use drugs regularly until his mother got sick. At that time, he started taking OxyContin. Then, on the day his mother was buried, he tried heroin for the first time. Unfortunately, even though his family knew about his drug problem, they didn't get him into drug rehab until much later, when he had a run-in with the law.

By that time, he was already deep in the throes of heroin addiction and it took years of going in and out of treatment before he finally got to the point where it looks like he's turned the corner.

During those years, he stole just about everything the family owned that could be moved out of the house with relative ease: TVs, DVDs, CDs, all of his father's tools - the tools that provided the family's livelihood. They lost their house, dad moved into a hotel, and then his car, and then subsidized housing. The three other sons moved in with relatives, the heroin addict lived in, among other similar places, a laundromat.

They were completed ruined.

You might think this is an unusual situation. Unfortunately, it's not as unusual as one would think. Thousands of families are ruined every year because one of the family members has a drug addiction problem. And if it could happen to this model family, it can happen to anyone.

What went wrong? How can you avoid this?

1. The boy was introduced to OxyContin at school. OxyContin abuse was rampant at this school. Other students were falling asleep standing up in the hallways and nodding off in class. Where were the teachers?

2. The family didn't get their son into drug rehab as soon as they realized he had a problem.

3. When he finally did get into drug rehab, it was a 30-day program. No way 30 days is enough to handle heroin addiction and get the guy turned around and able to lead a new life free of drugs.

Really, as simple as this seems, that's about all there is to it. Even if no one at the school did anything about the rampant drug use - a crime in itself - steps two and three above could have averted the entire disaster.

Almost all of the incidents that happened to this family connected to their son's heron addiction could have been avoided had they caught it soon enough and sent him to a long-term residential drug rehab program that really rehabilitated him and enabled him to live a life without drugs.

Let that be a lesson to the rest of us. If you've got a kid, or other family member, with a drug problem, get them into a long-term residential drug rehab program now. Things will only get worse until you do. Don't wait until everything is lost.
